Individuals with Disabilities Education Act 2004
Gives ALL students the right to an appropriate public education.
Includes:
Issues like inclusion
Least restricted environment
Appropriate placement
These laws protect exceptional student education (ESE)
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
FERPA
- Protects parents/guardians right to access their minor child’s education records
- Protects the right to request that education records be amended with accurate information
- Protects disclosure of education records to third parties without consent
Schools must have written permission from the parent/guardian to release information, whether it is verbal, electronic, or written communication.
Parents have the right to access their child’s information unless a court order restricts their access
No Child Left Behind 2002
NCLB
Addresses accountability for the student and the teacher.
High stakes standardized assessments are used to measure each student’s academic proficiency with the idea that disadvantaged students will receive interventions to help them meet grade-level standards, especially in reading and math
Race to the Top
RTTT
Forty-six states and the District of Columbia submitted comprehensive reform plans to compete in the Race to the Top competition
19 states have received funding so far, 34 states modified state education laws or policies to facilitate needed change
48 states worked together to create a voluntary set of rigorous college-ready and career-ready standards
The Consent Decree
Grounded in the 14th Amendment and the result of the League of United Latin American Citizens vs. State Board of Education, the Consent Decree protects English Language Learners and their right to a free, comprehensible education.
Addresses civil and academic rights of ELL students and requires instruction be delivered in a comprehensible manner so ELL students can fully participate
