Essential in helping students achieve
Educators must make an effort to communicate school initiatives to parents and community
Because students are from different backgrounds and cultures communication should be
(1) Sent home in students home language
(2) Sent home in a newsletter (printed copy/hard copy)
Parent communication should go home in physical form with a student
Parent Communication
CALLS are best in most situations involving BEHAVIOR
Teachers can and should communicate with parents/guardians as frequently as possible to report positive behaviors, especially if a child is showing improvement
*Communicate that you want to work WITH the parent/guardian to help the student
Student Communication
Academic and behavioral expectations must be clearly communicated to achieve a positive learning environment for all students.
Student Expectations:
- Developing classroom guidelines, rules, and/or expectations with students
- Providing a hard copy of the course outline to each student (secondary)
- Using nonverbal cues such as hand and eye gestures
- Providing a hard copy of a rubric to every student prior to a writing-based or project-based assignment
IEP/504 Meetings
- FORMAL collaborations with a team of educators who are focused on goals set out for a student
Teachers role in an IEP or 504 meeting
Objectively communicate student strengths and weaknesses that affect learning and assist with devising learning goals.
Who is a part of the IEP/504 meeting?
Teachers, school counselors, AND student
When do IEP meetings usually happen?
Quarterly
By law, revision meetings happen YEARLY
Meetings are about: setting clear and measurable goals for the student
Parent/Teacher Conference
INFORMAL meeting between the parent and teacher.
Student may or may NOT be present.
Teachers role in a parent/teacher conference
Objectively communicate information that parents are specifically asking about or, if the teacher called the meeting, specific concerns the teacher has that are affecting learning
NOT the time to point out all the student’s faults
