FIXED PROS - Occlusal Factors in Restoration Failure Flashcards
how can a restoration negatively affect the teeth? (3)
- fracture teeth
- increased mobility
- pain on biting
how can force damage a restoration? (2)
excessive force or lateral forces - in the wrong direction
how do you prevent occlusal failures occurring?
- good occlusal screening
- ICP
- lateral guidance - canine or group?
articulators and articulating papers
how do you describe ICP?
is it stable? is there sufficient room for restoration?
two types of lateral guidance
canine guidance - canine are in contact
group function - molars are in contact, normal wear with age
where should you NEVER have lateral guidance? why?
on a post crowned tooth
on a bridge pontic
tends to cause root fractures
forces on a bridge affect the abutment
what is interference?
a heavy tooth to tooth contact, preventing the jaw from moving through its intended path
how can a high amalgam restoration be spotted?
the shiny spot which the patient has continuously bitten on
which cusps tend to be affected on a lateral force working side interference?
upper - affects the buccal cusp
lower - affects the lingual cusps
what is non-working side interference?
teeth on the non-working side are clashing
which cusps are affected on non-working side interferences
upper - palatal
lower - buccal
how do you adjust a restoration when it is high in ICP and from lateral exercusion?
reduce the cusp height?
how do you adjust a restoration when it is high in ICP but nothing to do with lateral exercusion?
deepen the fossa
what must be checked before reinstating the canine guidance?
- perio status
- pulp vitality
- perioapicals - root length and angle
- articulated model to plan
