What is a Crown?
a crown is a restoration constructed outside the mouth, designed to encompass the entire tooth
what is the natural tooth tissue called when it is prepared for the crown?
crown preparation - crown prep
what is the preparation margin?
the point at which the crown will meet the natural tooth tissue
how do you measure the crown prep height?
the distance from the preparation margin to the occlusal/incisal to the tooth
what is the taper of a crown prep?
the convergence of the tooth walls
- between 6 and 12 degrees
what is the crown margin?
the margin of the crown, visible when there has been gum recession
define retention
the prevention of the crown uplifting in a vertical direction
define resistance
the prevention of the crown rotating off
what is the glue used to stick a crown down?
luting cement
what is the process of seating a crown down called?
cementation
if there is so much excess luting cement on the crown after cementation, what does this indicate?
that all of the preparation has been sufficiently covered by the cement
what is the core for the crown?
the area of tooth that holds the retention for the crown
- can be built up using composite
what can also be added onto the core to aid retention?
cast pore - gold alloy or cast metal alloy
what does a mouth look like if all teeth have to have crowns?
has to be justified
- shave down most enamel
what is the risk of removing enamel and exposing dentine?
the tubules can harbour bacteria
- risk the vitality of the tooth
