Fixed Appliance - Clinical Management Flashcards
What are the 6 normal keys to occlusion?
- Molar relationship - class 1
- Crown angulation - roots tipped distal as oppose to crown of tooth
- Torque (crown inclination) - all (except incisors) - occlusal surface tip lingual or palatal compared roots
- No rotation
- Tight contacts - no crowding/spaces
- Flat curve of spee- flat occlusal plane
What is ideal torque for upper incisors?
Crown tip lingually compared to roots of teeth
How does rotation of teeth affect space?
Rotated molars use more space
Rotated incisors use less space
What included in SWA prescription?
Each has own prescription
Built in tip valves, torque values and in-out values
What must be used for torque to be expressed?
Rectangular wire
How is the in-out position determined?
Thickness of wire
What are the main stages of tx?
- Level and align
- Space closure
- Additional stages
What is involved in level and align stage?
Correction: vertical, bucco-lingual, mesio-distal and rotation
What would the initial choice of wire be?
NiTi round wire
What is canine laceback?
Stops canine coming forwards - ligature wire under arch wire
Prevent canine crown move mesial - allow posterior teeth move
What wire use for space closure?
Use 0.019” x 0.025” SS
Less friction ideal for space closing
How can use sliding mechanism for space closure?
NiTi springs = closing coils
Elastics
What are the different types of retainers?
Removable - acrylic/ vacuum-formed
Bonded
What is a Hawley retainer?
Acrylic retainer w/ adams clasps on 6’s
Used when upper arch has been expanded
Used when eating
Prosthetic teeth can be added
What is an Essix retainer?
Vacuum-formed
Most commonly prescribed
Clear gum shield
Needs to be removed for eating/drinking
