Fitness Components Part 1 Flashcards
What are the 5 health-related components of fitness?
Body composition, aerobic power, flexibility, muscular endurance, muscular strength
What do health-related fitness components lead to?
Good health and a lower risk of hypo-kinetic disease
What are the 7 skill-related components of fitness?
Muscular power, reaction time, speed, coordination, agility, balance, anaerobic capacity
What are skill-related components of fitness directly related to?
Motor skill and athletic performance
What is aerobic power?
The ability to take up and supply oxygen to the muscles in order to sustain exercise
What are some factors which affect aerobic power?
Gender, age, genetics, training
How does age affect aerobic power?
Males have a greater aerobic power, larger hearts and larger blood volume than females
How does training affect aerobic power?
Athletes are able to increase stroke volume and cardiac output with training
What is body composition?
The ratio of fat-free mass to fat mass
What are the three main body types?
Ectomorph, mesomorph, endomorph
What is the body composition of ectomorphs?
Thin with little to no muscle or fat
What is the body composition of mesomorphs?
Medium build and fairly muscular
What is the body composition of endomorphs?
Large build with mostly fat
What are some factors which affect body composition?
Age, gender, fibre type and energy intake
How does age affect body composition?
After 40 years of age, people’s metabolism slows down
How does gender affect body composition?
The average male body fat is 15%, whereas the average female body fat is 25%
What is flexibility?
The ability of a join to move through its full range of motion
What are some factors which affect flexibility?
Joint structure, age, gender and temperature
How does joint structure affect flexibility?
Ball and socket joints tend to have the greatest flexibility
How does gender affect flexibility?
Females tend to be more flexible than males, because they possess greater levels of oestrogen
