Q

Intrinsic (local controls) vs extrinsic (systematic controls)

A

Intrinsic: built into in an organ
E.g. skeletal muscle uses up most O2 when exercising so chemical change directly on smooth muscle causing it to relax and dilate the vessels which results in more blood flow to the muscle more O2

Extrinsic: regulatory mechanisms initiated outside the organ to alter organ’s activity -> more complex control systems to maintain homeostasis.
2 major regulatory systems: nervous n endocrine systems

Q

Homeostasis control mechanisms

A

Negative feedback: rise in body temp -> sweating, low body temp -> shiver generate heat

Positive feedback: increase oxytocin for contractions during birth -> triggers more oxytocin to be released
