What does Pakeha mean?
White. It’s what Maori called Europeans.
Were the Maori people surprised when they saw European ships?
Yes. European ships are much bigger and very different.
When and who came in the first encounter?
Abel Tasman came in 1642.
How did the Maori react to seeing Europeans?
They did what they would normally do. They sent 2 wakas, and did a war dance.
How did the Europeans respond to the Maori people?
They blew their trumpets and shot their cannons messing peace, but the Maori people mistook this to mean war.
What did this misunderstanding do?
When the Europeans sent a few people over, the Maori killed them, so the Europeans left.
What is powhiri?
A welcome ceremony.
Who lead the second encounter?
James Cook, on his ship, the H.M.S. Endeavour.
Why was James Cook exploring?
He was on an official mission from King George III to both explore the pacific and observe the transit of Venus.
What was James Cook’s secret mission?
To look for a place called Terra Australis Incognito.
What is Terra Australis Incognito?
A land mass people theorized to be in the big uncharted place in the pacific.
When was James Cook’s first voyage?
1769
Who did James Cook recruit on his first mission and why?
He recruited a Tahitian chief for translation.
What did the king want?
More land. He said to take any land “with consent of the natives.”
