What is First Aid?
Immediate care given to a casualty before the arrival of Medical Personnel.

What is the treatment for heat cramps?
Move to shade, then loosen clothing, and give cool water.

Headache, excessive sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, muscle cramps, pale, moist and cool skin, clammy skin.
Whose First Aid dressing should be used on the casualty?
The casualty’s own.
What is the treatment for heatstroke?
Immerse in coldest water available or remove clothing and wet entire body while fanning, transport to the nearest medical facility.
Describe manual pressure.
Place hand on dressing and exert firm pressure for 5-10 minutes.
What is the basic proven principle in splinting fractures?
Splint them where they lie.
What are four types of burns?
Thermal, electrical, chemical, and laser.
Name five of the twelve methods of carrying a casualty.
Pistol belt carry, Two man support carry, Neck drag, Four arms carry, and Back lift carry.
Where is a tourniquet applied?
Around a limb, between the injury and the heart and never place it directly on a wound, fracture, or joint.
When should you not remove clothing from a burn?
When clothing is stuck to the wound or if in a contaminated area.
Name the three categories of Heat Injury.
Heat Cramps, Heat Exhaustion, and Heat Stroke.
Name four common points for checking a pulse.
The side of the neck, groin, wrist, and ankle.
What are the two types of fractures?
Open (compound) and closed (simple).
Should you give a casualty anything to eat or drink, when treating or preventing shock?

Should casualties with abdominal wounds be given anything to eat or drink?
No, but moistening the lips is allowed.
When may resuscitation measures be discontinued?
When a doctor tells you to stop, you are relieved by others, you cannot physically continue and when the casualty starts to breathe on their own.
What are the ABC’s of medical treatment?
- Open the airway and restore breathing.
- Stop the bleeding.
- Dress and bandage the wounds to prevent infection.
- Prevent shock.
How do you stop bleeding?
- Apply a field dressing.
- Apply manual pressure.
- Elevate the injured limb.
- Apply a pressure dressing.
- Apply a tourniquet.
What are the three types of bleeding and how are they recognized?
- Arterial: Blood is bright red and will spurt with the heartbeat.
- Venous: Blood is dark red and flows in a steady stream.
- Capillary: Blood oozes from the wound.
