Fire Protection & Ice and Rain Protection Flashcards
How do the engine fire detection loops work?
sensor tubes are filled with helium gas; as temperature increases the gas expands activating an alarm switch
Name the engine fire detection loop zones.
Leading Edge Zone (LEZ), Primary Engine Zone (PEZ), Main Wheel Well Zone (MWW)
What indicates the PEZ or LEZ loop failed?
FAULT A, CHECK FIRE DETECT, MASTER WARNING
What indicates the MWW loop failed?
FAULT B, CHECK FIRE DETECT, MASTER WARNING
If the LEZ loops fails and the PEZ detects a fire will a fire indication result?
no, will indicate a fault only
What indicates the APU loop failed?
FAULT, CHECK FIRE DETECT, MASTER WARNING
What indicates an engine fire is detected?
PULL/FUEL HYD OFF handle light MASTER WARNING CHECK FIRE DETECT ENGINE FIRE PRESS TO RESET light Fire bell
Number and location of engine fire bottles
two spherical, dual port bottles located in the left wing root
What indicates an engine fire bottle has been depleted or has low pressure?
MASTER WARNING
CHECK FIRE DETECT
BTL LOW
Pulling the PULL FUEL/HYD OFF T handle results in:
fuel shutoff valve closes
hydraulic shutoff valve closes
FWD and AFT fire bottles arm
Engine fire detection system test lights
PULL FUEL/HYD OFF handle MASTER WARNING CHECK FIRE DETECT ENGINE FIRE PRESS TO RESET FAULT A and FAULT B Fire bell
Number and location of smoke detectors
4, one located above door in fwd baggage compartment, two located on the ceiling of the aft baggage compartment, one located in lavatory
Forward baggage compartment smoke and test indication
MASTER WARNING
SMOKE
baggage fwd SMOKE/EXTG switchlight
FIRE BOTTLE FWD BOTTLE ARM
Describe the forward baggage compartment fire extinguishing system.
one high rate discharge fire extinguisher bottle installed above fwd baggage compartment, one shared low rate discharge fire extinguisher bottle located in tail section, discharge simultaneously and provide 45 minutes of suppression
Aft baggage compartment smoke and test indication
MASTER WARNING SMOKE baggage aft SMOKE/EXTG switchlight FIRE BOTTLE AFT BOTTLE ARM VENT INLT and VELT OTLT CLOSED
Describe the aft baggage compartment fire extinguishing system.
one high rate discharge fire extinguisher bottle installed above the aft baggage compartment discharges, one shared low rate discharge fire extinguisher bottle located in tail section discharges approximately seven minutes later and provides 45 minutes of suppression
Describe the lavatory fire protection.
lavatory waste bin is equipped with a thermally-activated fire extinguisher bottle mounted in the roof of the waste bin, end caps melt off during fire to discharge into bin
SMOKE warning light
smoke in baggage area
CHECK FIRE DETECT warning light
engine or APU fire or detector loop malfunction
Heated components include:
leading edges of propeller blades
left, right, and standby pitot/static probes
left and right Angle of Attack (AOA) vanes
left and right engine intake flanges
left and right windshield panels and Captain’s side window
How do the ice detection probes work?
via the “piezoelectric” principle, probes continuously vibrate at a natural resonant frequency and when ice accumulates the frequency increases
Airframe deice system pressure is regulated to:
18 psi
What controls the inflation and deflation of the deice boot sets?
6 Dual Distribution Valves (DDVs)
When are the DDVs heated?
automatically whenever the SAT is below 5C or the airframe mode selector is in MANUAL
