(FINALS) Chapter 10: Climate Change & Environmental Issues Flashcards
The continuous rise in the global average temperatures
Global warming
Term used to characterize the impacts of global warming on the Earth’s climate system
Climate change
It is the main cause of the present faster than historic rise in average world temperature
Combustion of fossil fuels
This term describes how gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane, and nitrous oxide, retain heat in the atmosphere
Greenhouse gases
What happens to the weather as global temperatures climb?
Widespread shifts in weather systems occur, making events like droughts, hurricanes, drowned, and floods, more intense and unpredictable
Effects of climate change on the environment include:
- Melting ice caps
Positive loop is that darker ocean water is exposed to take in more sunlight
- Sea levels rise
Due to melting ice and glaciers and warm water expanding in volume
- Flooding
Due to extreme weather and sea levels rising
- Warmer ocean waters & marine heat waves
Marino ecosystem is affected; increased absorption of CO2 acidifies bodies of water
What are ecosystem stressors?
These are the outbreak of invasive species, diseases, & pests that upset the life cycles of different fauna and flora and cause the ecosystem to struggle in adapting to these changes
Effect of Climate Change on Agriculture:
- Changes in precipitation pattern result in longer droughts and unexpected fooods
- Crops could be destroyed more frequently
- Ecosystems could invade and make maintenance more difficult for farmers
Effects of Climate Change on Animals:
- Threat of extinction
- Biodiversity crisis
- Coral bleaching or starvation of reefs
Effects of climate change on humans:
- Widespread sickness, starvation, conflict, injuries, fatalities
- Worsening air quality leading to forest fires and ozone pollution
- Significant toll on mental health
- Displacement
This historical era brought brought about the greenhouse effect by warming the atmosphere and releasing greenhouse gases into environment as a result of technological advancements
Industrial revolution
It is a movement that emphasizes how important it is for people to value and save environment. Increasing this can help protect our planets, natural resources, and slow down environmental degradation.
Environmental awareness and consciousness
- Adopted in December 1997
- An international treaty that aims to reduce the emission of gases that contribute to global warming.
- This protocol commits each signatory or member by setting internationally binding emission reduction targets.
Kyoto Protocol
- another global agreement set to protect the stratospheric ozone layer by phasing out the production and consumption of ozone depleting substances
Montreal protocol
A plan that guides the country on how sustainable development can be achieved from inclusive growth while building adaptive capacities of communities
National disaster, risk reduction, and management plan (NDRRMP)
