finallll Flashcards
Most infectious diseases are what?
communicable (contagious) or capable of spreading from one person to another/ some are not!
Infectious diseases:
a disease that is spread from one living thing to another through the environment
Infectious diseases that are not all communicable/ contagious
Cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and chronic respiratory disease (4)
Microorganisms
(microbes) organisms so small they can only be seen through a microscope (not visible to the naked eye)
Pathogens
microorganisms that cause disease
4 types of infectious disease
Bacteria: a large group of single celled microorganisms (Food poisoning)
Viruses: smallest of the pathogens (very simple)- (common cold)
Fungi: organism such as yeast, molds, and mushrooms (grow in warm, dark, and moist areas (Athletes foot)
Protozoans: single- celled organisms that are larger and more complex that bacteria - (Malaria)
How are pathogens spread? (4)
Infected people – physical contact or indirect contact such as sneeze
Infected animals – bites (rabies)
Contaminated objects: door knobs, cup, needles, etc.
Contaminated food, soil, or water: salmonella bacteria, e-coli, etc.
Some common infectious bacterial diseases:
Strep throat
Lyme disease
Bacterial meningitis
Tuberculosis
Etc.
Treatment for anything bacterial
Antibiotics
Some common infectious viral diseases
Common cold
Influenza (flu)
Pneumonia
Covid- 19
Hepatitis (A, B, C)
Treatment for viruses
Rest
Well - balanced diet
Lots of fluids (water)
Over the counter medicines
Body’s three lines of defense against disease:
Physical and chemical defenses:
(skin, saliva, tears, mucus membranes, cilia, etc.)
Inflammation: your body’s general response to all kinds of injury:(cuts scrapes, etc)
The Immune system: fights disease by producing a separate set of weapons for each kind of pathogen it faces.
