Why was the Emancipation Proclamation issued?
- to weaken the southern forces by taking away the slaves
- changed the cause of the fighting from keeping the union to abolishing slavery which ensured that the British did not help the Confederacy because of the war cause and effort

It meant that all African American slaves were free in the southern states only if the Union won the war

- The Union would use blockade ships to block the south from getting supplise
- The Union would also seize the Mississippi river to block off the supply of troops to the south
- They would take control of the Confederate capital Richmond, Virginia

- The Confederacy would fight until the North got tired/they would play a diffensive war and stay on their land to fight
- They would also rely on Europe for help since they were a big part of the cotton trade

- the overprinting of money caused inflation

- The economy was suffering, inflation was high (butter cost $15)

Explain the Dred Scott case:
He was a slave who was moved from a slave state to a free state and then back to the slave one. The owner of Scott dies which means Scott and his family is free. Irene, the wife of the slave owner, refused so Scott sued b/c he was free
