first nations
any group of indigenous peoples in canada officially recognized by the federal government.
inuit
member of the indigenous people of northern canada, and parts of greenland and alaska.
métis
person of mixed indigenous and euro-american ancestry.
exceptional distress
major mental or emotional problems for every day of the last 30 days. strongest predictor of feeling exceptional distress is the inability to work.
second shift
the disproportionate amount of domestic labour done by women after their paid labour when in a relationship with a male working partner.
fatherhood premium
benefits men receive as result of becoming a father. work is always expected to take priority over other household duties for men. they benefit more from being parents and experience less role strain.
marriage premium
the benefits men receive from marriage.
pink jobs
boring and mundane housework that usually falls to women.
structural unemployment
when there is a mismatch between the skills people have and the demands of society. sometimes jobs become obsolete.
frictional unemployment
people who are looking for work or between jobs.
keynesianism
ideology that argues for policies that keep employment, productivity and demand high and stable. emphasizes reducing unemployment and the boom/bust cycle of capitalism.
participation rate
the percentage of people in the labour force.
employment rate
the percentage of the population that is employed.
unemployment rate
percentage of the participation rate that is unemployed. people who are actively looking for jobs.
deaths of despair
deaths due to suicide and substances as a result of increasing economic instability for the working class.
food desert
region where a disproportionate nimber of people have limited access to food. usually low income neighbourhoods.
food swamp
region of limited access to healthy foods, but lots of access to convenience and fast foods.
stupidity/feckless hypothesis
assuming people are acting out of a lack of intelligence or due to impulsiveness. insulting, based on assumptions.
marginal food insecurity
those who worry about running out of food or have a limited selection due to cost
moderate food insecurity
those who had to compromise the quality and/or quantity of food because they ca’t afford it.
severe food insecurity
those who report skipping meals, reducing the amount they eat, or going days without food due to cost.
disordered eating
eating on the go, alone, and unpredictably. usually convenience foods in larger amounts.
