chapter 2 (health care services & research) Flashcards
health care system limited by what 2 constraints?
- must be known & trusted treatment
- doctors must accept that problem is medical in nature
informal care
care provided by a person such as a family member or friend without financial compensation.
preventative medicine
form of medical practice that attempts to reduce the risk of disease occurring (prophylaxis), as opposed to treating disease that has already occurred. attempts to identify disease processes early in the natural history of a disease in order to intervene earlier based on the assumption that earlier treatment is more effective.
primary care
usual first point of contact by people seeking health care; source of everyday care needs. family doctors and emergency departments provide most primary care.
cultural safety
adopting the cultural stance of the client in order to make health care services more appropriate and accessible.
social care
the provision of services to people in need of care or protection, particularly those with a disability, emotional or mental issues, addictions, or problems related to aging.
herd immunity
the resistance of a given population to the spread of an infectious agent.
cross-sectional study
examine the relationship (association) between two or more variables in a defined population at a single point in time.
case-control study
observational study method comparing a group who have a disease with a group (controls) who do not.
odds ratio
the ratio of two odds, odds being the probability of occurrence to that of non-occurrence. aka relative odds. way f comparing the odds of getting a disease if exposed to a factor vs. the odds of getting same disease if not exposed to the factor.
recall bias
error due to problems of recall or differential recall of past events.
relative risk
the ratio of the risk of disease in populations exposed to a factor to the risk of unexposed populations.
conflate
to fuse two things together; in logic it means confusing two things by inappropriately merging their meanings or properties together.
