Final Exam Flashcards
Explain why chickens have a dietary requirement for the amino acid arginine
Chickens cannot synthesize this amino acid themselves
Name the complex B vitamin that may become deficient if not enough tryptophan is supplied in the chickens’ diet
Niacin (B3)
first limiting amino acid for chicken
methionine
List three factors that may affect the requirements of calcium for egg production in laying hens
Rate of lay
Age
Egg size
adopted chickens’ energy requirement system
Explain your rationale.
Metabolizable energy
Both feces and urine are excreted the same pathway in chickens so there is no way to separate the energy loss from either of these two sources
Name the four nutritional feeding phases for broilers
-Egg incubation (21 days)
-Broiler starter (21 days)
-Broiler grower (21 days)
-Broiler finisher (14 days)
Explain why the energy density of broiler pullets’ diets is greater than that of layer pullets’ diets
Broiler pullets grow much faster than layers pullets, so they require more energy
Name two non-essential amino acids that are considered essential for growing chicks
Glycine and serine
There is a growing concern about welfare issues related to livestock including the poultry industry. Based on the data presented below and discussed in class, would you recommend the use of an aviary raising management system over conventional or enriched system? Explain your rationale
There is no statistically significant differences between the three housing strategies in relation to consumption, egg production, and waste production. The aviary system provides more space for the chickens and as a result this is more appealing to consumers so I would recommend an aviary system for more space and happy chickens.
what is the cori cycle?
glucose from liver goes to muscles →
glucose is used to create energy →
breaks glucose down to pyruvate →
lactate → back to liver
why would you use fat in horse diets?
improve energy density
decreases heat production
fat spares glycogen
