Fighting Disease Flashcards
How can bacteria make you feel ill?
DAMAGING YOUR CELLS AND RELEASING TOXINS.
How do viruses replicate themselves?
INVADING YOUR CELLS AND USING THE CELLS MACHINERY TO PRODUCE MANY COPIES OF THEMSELVES.
What are the microorganisms that enter the body and cause disease called?
PATHOGENS.
What are the three lines of attack a white blood cell has?
CONSUMING THEM
PRODUCING ANTIBODIES
PRODUCING ANTITOXINS
What happens when your white blood cells come across a foreign antigen?
THEY BEGIN PRODUCING ANTIBODIES THAT LOCK ONTO AND KILL THE INVADING CELLS
What happens when you’re injected with a vaccination?
THEY INJECT SMALL AMOUNTS OF DEAD OR INACTIVE MICROORGANISMS OF THE DISEASE WHICH ARE HARMLESS WHICH CARRY ANTIGENS CAUSING YOUR BODY TO PRODUCE ANTIBODIES TO ATTACK THEM
What is a big outbreak of disease called?
AN EPIDEMIC
What are some bad reactions you can have from a vaccine?
SWELLING OR EVEN FEVERS OF SEIZURES
Do painkillers kill the disease?
NO. THEY JUST HELP REDUCE THE PAIN/SYMPTOMS
WHAT DO ANTIBIOTICS DO?
THEY KILL OR PREVENT THE GROWTH OF THE BACTERIA CAUSING THE PROBLEM WITHOUT KILLING BODY CELLS
Can antibiotics kill a virus?
NO.
Overuse of antibiotics is causing what?
BACTERIA EVOLVING ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE.
What’s a pandemic?
WHEN A DISEASE SPREADS ALL OVER THE WORLD.
