Field Sanitation - ATP 4-25.12 - Chapter 9 Flashcards
What forms can toxic environmental materials be found in?
Gas, liquid, and solid
Why are gases of high concern?
They spread easily
What are the potential symptoms of exposure to toxic industrial materials?
acute: coughing, difficulty breathing, irritation of the nose, throat, mouth, or skin.
What are the routes of entry for TIM?
inhalation, absorption, ingestion and injection
What are chemical effects generally classified into?
Irritants, Asphyxiants, Anesthetics, Systemic poisons, Carcinogens.
What are irritants?
materials that cause inflammation
What are asphyxiants?
materials that deprive the body from oxygen; carbon monoxide and cyanide
What are anesthetics?
agents that depress the CNS
what do systemic poisons do?
damage internal organs; carbon tetrachloride produces necrosis of the liver
What are carcinogens?
materials that cause cancer
What are commonly encountered toxic gases and liquids?
Carbon monoxide, hydrogen chloride, bore/gun gases, liquid chemicals
What is the best defense against toxic industrial materials hazards?
Avoid the hazard by deterring or preventing it from being released; or know
exactly where, what, and how much toxic industrial material hazards are present in the area of operations
