Field Sanitation - ATP 4-25.12 - Chapter 10 Flashcards
What is noise?
unwanted sound (pure tone or complex tones), unwanted speech or music
What are the 4 properties/characteristics of noise hazards?
Frequency, intensity, nature of noise, and exposure duration
What is frequency?
Pitch. High pitched noises are more dangerous
Intensity is defined as what?
relative loudness of noise. The louder, the greater potential for hearing loss
What is the nature of the noise?
Continuous or intermittent.
Why is exposure duration dangerous?
The longer the exposure, the greater the damage to hearing.
What are the 2 types of noise?
steady and impulse
What are the characteristics of steady noise?
Does not significantly change in intensity or frequency. (vehicles)
What are the characteristics of impulse noise?
sharp rise in intensity followed by a rapid decline in intensity. (weapon fire)
What are the effects of noise to the ear?
excessive exposure causes hairs and hair cells in ears to over-activate, causing injury.
What does initial hearing loss result in?
Hearing impairment in the frequency range above those frequencies important to understanding speech
Why is good hearing is critical?
it aids in weapon identification, determining enemy or friendly positions, hearing enemy movement, hearing radio messages, localizing snipers, recognizing languages
When must earplugs and ear muffs be worn at the same time?
When exposed to steady noise levels greater than 103 decibel, A-weighting time-weighted average or greater than 165 decibel, A-weighting
What are the advantages if ear plugs in the field?
Prevent hearing loss, economical form of hearing protection, don’t usually interfere with work operations, and easy to carry
What are potential problems when wearing earmuffs?
eyeglasses may prevent a good seal and may make earmuffs uncomfortable.
