fibrous dysplasia Flashcards
what is it?
benign, developmental disorder of bone, causes normal skeletal tissue to be replaced by fibrous tissue
where does it commonly affect?
bones of head and neck
what causes it and in who?
genetic mutation
paediatric patients
what is the pathophysiology?
genetic mutation results in lesions of fibrous tissue and immature bone
can affect one bone or more
defective mineralisation may result in angular deformities and affected bone is wider with thinned cortices
how does it clinically present?
bone pain and deformities
pathological fractures
what investigations are used?
bone scan, x-ray
what is seen on bone scan?
intense increase in uptake during development but the lesion usually becomes inactive
what is the buzzword on x-ray?
sheperds crook deformity
what causes sheperds crook deformity?
involvement of proximal femur
