chondrosarcoma Flashcards
what is it?
malignant tumour that produces cartilage
who is it more common in?
adults
what are the 3 types?
dedifferentiated, clear cell, mesenchymal
what is the pathophysiology of dedifferentiated?
low grade chondrosarcoma with a separate high grade component that does not produce cartilage
what is the pathophysiology of clear cell?
malignant chondrocytes have abundant clear cytoplasm, associated osteoclastic cells and reactive bone that can suggest osteosarcoma
what is the pathophysiology of mesenchymal?
sheets of well differentiated hyaline cartilage with surrounding small round cells
how does it clinically present?
axial skeleton and head and neck
locally invasive in bone and into muscle and fat
how are they graded?
1-3
cellularity, cytological atypia and mitotic activity
where do clear cells arise?
epiphyses of long tubular bones
what is seen on x-ray?
reactive cortical thickening
