Q

How do you pronounce toutou (/u/) vs. tutu (/y/)?

A

They both have rounded, slightly protruding lips. Once the lips are rounded and extended, the /u/ sound in toutou is produced with the tongue pulled toward the back of the mouth, like when pronouncing “pool.” To get from the /u/ sound of toutou to the /y/ sound of tutu, the tongue advances toward the rounded lips and comes to rest just short of the space between the teeth.
