Q

What are the three ways to ask a question in French? Which is the most and least common, and which is considered a higher level of speech?

A
  1. Intonation alone: any statement can be made into a question if the voice is made to rise in pitch at the end. Intonation is the most common.
  2. With est-ce que:any statement becomes a question when preceded by est-ce que, and accompanied by a rise in pitch at the end.
  3. Inversion: the subject pronoun, which normally comes before the verb, is placed after it, and the voise rises in pitch. Inversion is considered a higher level of speech, and is the least common. It is not generally used in familiar speech except in common expressions such as “Comment vas-tu?”and “Quelle huere est-il?”
