Charlemagne
also called Charles the Great. He ruled the Frankish kingdom and made the empire greater. He conquered more lands, which spread Christianity. He also reunited western Europe, making his empire larger than the Byzantine Empire.
Secular
relating to/about the world and not religion or spirituality
Clovis
the leader of Gaul (present-day France), converted to Christianity with persuasion of his wife (according to a legend) he also led another battle, but saw they were being defeated, so he asked for help from the Christian God. After, they won, which led many of him and his warriors to convert. Clovis also unified the Frankish kingdom.
Fief
a piece of land given to a vassal by a lord, which was part of the feudal system
vassal
the person who was given the land from a lord that will be loyal and serve the lord in return
Knight
during medieval times, a warrior who served the monarch (king or queen) and/or lord. Sometimes, they fight on a horse or on foot.
serf
a peasant in the middle ages that are legally obliged to living on the lord’s land
manor
the lord’s land or property in the middle ages
Tith
a designated 10% of a family’s income to the church (a payment to the church)
Chivary
a code followed by medieval knights regarding their behavior and stressing important values, like loyalty and courage
