What was feudalism (super basic)?
You have to give up something in order to get something. What you get and give up both depend on your class. (Often cash or food for protection)
What is a manor?
A castle and the surrounding areas being protected
What was the feudalism/manorialism system?
A political system organized to defend people and land. (Military was essential)
What kind of economy was a manorialism system?
Agrarian–>make food for people beyond your family.
Farming was very important.
Beginnings of civilization, expansion of society.
What social system type was used in Europe during Middle Ages?
Hierarchal: (Nobility:) -king -lords -vassals -Knights (Commoners, majority:) -serfs
What did the manorial system do?
It protected from invaders (barbarians disrupt life), reinforced feudalism
What were some characteristics of the manorial system?
- castles
- rigid class structure (if you were a serf, but if you were a noble–>you could work your way up)
- self-sufficiency–>food grown for only people living on manor
- declining towns
- people more loyal to lords than kings–> king’s power goes down, lords’ power goes up, BAD for king and because that means nO sTaBiLiTy
