What is a pandemic?
A multi-regional disease affecting multiple parts of the world.
What is an epidemic?
A disease that has been prevented from becoming a pandemic.
What were the effects of the plague?
- trade went down, prices went up
- population down, especially in small towns
- serfs left manors in search of better wages (high risk jobs because of bp)
- Jews blamed for plague & persecuted
- church suffered a loss of prestige
About what portion of the world’s, and Europe’s, population was killed by the plague?
World–>almost 1/4
Europe–>about 1/2
(About 100 million)
How long did the plague last for?
It lasted for three years.
What caused the plague?
The oriental rat flea.
The flea got it from the rats, then the flea bit the rat, jumped to the human, and bit the human. Thus, the disease was transferred.
What type of disease is the plague?
Bloodborn (bacterial)
Where did the Black Plague originate?
Asia, although it mostly goes from Constantinople and the Black Sea.
Why was it called the Black Death?
Because its victims would have blackish sores, which would pop and eventually be drained (another way in which the disease was spread).
What was the bacteria that caused the bubonic plague called?
Yrsenia Pestis
What else was the bubonic plague known as?
The Black Death
