What kind of relationship is there between secular and religious power?
Inverse relationship: as one rises, the other falls.
What does secular refer to?
The gov? Like kings and stuff (?)
What is the church hierarchy?

Where did monks and nuns live?
They lived in monasteries, apart from regular society.
By what three rules did monks and nuns live in monasteries by?
- poverty–>have to give up all worldly possessions
- chastity–>no relationships
- obedience–>obey God
What did the monks and nuns do?
They gave rise to the first universities and wrote stuff, which eventually got spread around and people learned to read. Basically, they strengthened knowledge and education.
What were the similarities and differences between Friars and monks?
Friars were similar to monks in that they took the same vows. But different in that they do not live apart from the world like monks do.
What did Friars do?
They went into the Germanic areas to convert and served the community by preaching (parish priests).
What was Canon Law (general)?
It was a church law that was well-meaning, but was taken advantage of by greedy people.
What were the two powers the canon law gave?
- ability to excommunicate–>church officials can kick people out of church
- the interdict–>sacraments and religious services could be forbidden in the king’s land
What did canon law do to the relationship between church and king?
It led to conflicts between kings and popes because it lessened the power of the King and strengthened that of the pope.
What empire did Otto the great rule?

What did Otto the great do?
- suppress Magyar invasions–>ensures his rule of the HRE
- creates the strongest state in Europe until the 12th century
How did Otto the great attempt to reclaim the power taken from kings by the church?
Lay Investure–>kings can appoint church officials
Kings often donated land to church, wanted a say. The king’s and nobles appoint church officials, which upset the popes and led to actions by the church.
How did the church retaliate to lay Investure?
In 1075, pope Gregory VII banned lay Investure, which angered the emperor.
