What is a cystic hygroma?
Large cystic mass in neck, axilla or mediastinum because of a lymphatic developmental anomaly
What may a cystic hygroma be associated with?
Turner syndrome Trisomy 21 Trisomy 18 Fetal Hydrops Congenital heart defects
Are cystic hygromas always accompanied with other abnormalities?
No, it could be an isolated incidence
When does a cystic hygroma usually present?
Less than 20 weeks
What is a nuchal translucency test?
A measurement of normal subcutaneous fluid filled space between back of fetal neck and overlying skin
When is a nuchal translucency test performed?
Between 11-13 weeks
What is the purpose of a NT test?
A screening for trisomy 21 and other chromosomal anomalies
only a soft marker
What else can you look for as a soft marker of trisomy 21?
Absent nasal bone
What should the images look like with an NT?
Sagittal view
Embryo fills 75% or more of image
Clear of amnion
How is the NT measured?
Inner margins
What is considered abnormal for NT?
Greater than 3 mm
What are some other masses that could be found on a fetal neck?
Teratoma
Neural tube defect
Hemangioma
Thyroid enlargement/goiter
