Fetal Circulation Flashcards
What does the umbilical vein split into?
Left portal vein and ductus venosus
What is the ductus venosus?
first fetal shunt, bypasses liver, regulates umbilical venous blood flow
What is the foramen ovale?
2nd fetal shunt, bypasses right side of heart and lungs, blood goes straight into left atrium
What is the crista dividens?
tissue barrier in RA, helps direct portion of blood away from FO towards RV
What is the ductus arteriosus?
3rd fetal shunt, dumps blood directly into aorta, bypasses lungs
Where do the umbilical arteries originate from?
internal iliac arteries
What do the umbilical arteries become?
umbilical ligaments, prox segments of superior vesicle arteries
Where is the ductus arteriosus located?
aortic isthmus
What is the ductus arteriosus renamed after birth?
ligamentum arteriosus
What is it called if the ductus arteriosus remains open after birth?
Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)
What is the foramen ovale renamed after birth?
fossa ovalis
What is it called if the foramen ovale remains open after birth?
atrial septal defect (ASD)
What does the umbilical vein become after birth?
ligamentum teres
What does the ductus venosum become after birth?
ligamentum venosum (seen on U/S)
