Fermentation Flashcards
what does fermentation generate? from what? when/what doesn’t it use?
ATP
- from organic molecules
- in the absence of oxygen
- without the use of the electron transport chain
what are the 2 stages of fermentation and what do they produce?
- Glycolysis –> produces 2 ATP per glucose
2. Regeneration –> of NAD+
what are 2 common types of fermentation?
- alcohol fermentation
2. lactic acid fermentation
what is the final electron acceptor in fermentation?
an organic molecule
lactic acid fermentation –> pyruvate
alcohol fermemntation –>acetaldehyde
what are the steps in alcohol fermentation
glucose (6 carbon) –> 2X ATP, 2X NADH, 2X pyruvate (3 carbon)
2X pyruvate –> 2X CO2, 2X Acetaldehyde
2X Acetaldehyde + 2X NADH –> 2X ethanol, 2X NAD+
what are the steps in lactic acid fermentation?
glucose (6 carbon sugar) –> 2X ATP, 2X NADH, 2X pyruvate
2X pyruvate + 2X NADH –> 2X lactate, 2X NAD+
