Femur and Hip Joint Flashcards
What is the longest and heaviest bone in the body?
Femur
What is the fovea capitus?
Site of attachment for the ligament of the head which supplies the femur head with blood supply.
Proximally what does the linea aspera split into?
Medially: Pectineal line
Laterally: Gluteal Tuberosity
Distally, what does the linea aspera divide into?
The medial and lateral supracondylar ridges.
What structure is between the condyles of the femur?
Intercondylar Notch/Fossa
What does the term popliteal usually refer to in regards to an area of the body?
The back of the knee.
Which condyle of the femur is longer?
Medial
What is normal angle between the femoral neck and shaft within the hip joint?
125*
What does the Q-Angle stand for?
Quadriceps angle.
In which direction is the femur angulated? Why?
The femur is angulated towards the midline of the body due to the width of the pelvis and the femur meeting the hip joint at an angle.
Where does the Q-Angle run from in the body?
ASIS through the midline of the patella. (anterior superior iliac spine)
What are the actual articulations of the hip joint?
Femoral head and the lunate surface of the acetabulum of the innominate bone.
What type of joint is the hip joint?
Synovial, ball and socket. (Multiaxial)
What are the 3 capsular ligaments of the hip joint capsule?
- Iliofemoral
- Pubofemoral
- Ischiofemoral
Which ligament forms the anterior part of the hip joint capsule?
Iliofemoral ligament
When is the Iliofemoral ligament tight?
In hip extension and external rotation which prevents the femur from going too far back.
Which ligament forms the interior portion of the hip joint capsule?
Pubofemoral Ligament
Which hip ligament is tight during hip extension and abduction?
Pubofemoral Ligament
What are the attachment points of the Pubofemoral ligament?
-Body of the pubis
-femoral neck
(spirals under the neck)
The Ischiofemoral ligament forms which portion of the hip joint capsule?
Ischiofemoral Ligament
When is the Ischiofemoral ligament tight?
In hip extension and medial rotation.
List the attachment points of the Ischiofemoral ligament?
-Ischium posterior to the acetabulum
(rolls over the neck of the femur)
-attaches anteriorly on the greater trochanter
What anatomical feature of the femur is responsible for creating the Q-Angle?
a) acetabular shape
b) angle of neck
c) angle of shaft
d) size of greater trochanter
e) trochlea is thicker medially
b) angle of the neck of the femur
The intertrochanter crest is only visible on which view of the femur?
a) anterior
b) posterior
c) medial
d) lateral
e) superior
b) posterior
- LINE is anterior view
