Anatomical Terminology Flashcards
Descrie the Regional approach to studying anatomy.
How the body is organized into segements and layers (surface anatomy)
What approach to studying anatomy looks at the body’s different organ systems?
Systemic
What type of approach/practice does anatomy use in the medical field?
Clinical.
Describe Anatomical Position.
- standing erect forward
- feet parallel and forward
- arms at side with palms facing forward
What plane divides the body into right and left halves? (this plane runs anterior/posterior)
- Sagittal Plane
- (Midsagittal is two equal halves)
Describe the Frontal/Coronal plane?
Runs through the body from left to right and divides the body into anterior and posterior halves (front and back)
Which plane runs through the body in a tale top fashion and divides the body into superior and inferior halves?
Transverse Plane
Pair each body plane with the appropriate axes of movement.
Sagittal Plane = Frontal Axis
Frontal Plane = Sagittal Axis
Transverse Plane = Longitudinal Axis
Describe Superior-Inferior
towards the head or foot
Anterior-Posterior
(ventral-dorsal)
Towards the front or back
Define Dorsum.
The superior aspect of any part that protrudes anteriorly from he body OR a posterior surface.
Which terms describe “towards the midline or towards the outside”?
Medial-Lateral
Describe proximal-distal relationships.
Close to or farther away from the attachment point to the axial skeleton, usually only used when referring to limbs.
What terms are used to describe “close to or away from the surface”?
Superficial-Deep
Define plantar:
The sole of the foot ONLY
Palmer defined:
The palm of the hand ONLY (volar)
Describe the terms of Laterality.
Unilateral: one side only
Bilateral: occur on both sides
Ipsilateral: on the same side
Contralateral: on opposite sides
Where does dorsiflexion-plantarflexion occur?
Talocrural Joint (ankle joint)
Where does eversion/inversion occur in the foot?
Subtalar joint of the foot
Describe cross-flexion/cross-extension.
horizontal flexion/extension while the shoulder is flexed at 90 degrees
Describe eversion/inversion.
Eversion, the sole of the foot moves out
Inversion. sole of the foot moves in (how I roll my ankle)
If you were to separate the true pelvis from the false pelvis, which plane would you use?
Transverse Plane
Which plane and axis do the movements flexion-extension, dorsiflexion-plantarflexion, and scapular protraction-retraction occur in?
Sagittal Plane around the Frontal Axis
Abduction-Adduction, Inversion-Eversion, and scapular elevation-depression and scapular rotation occur in which plane and axis?
Frontal Plane and Sagittal Axis
What movements occur in the transverse plane along the longitudinal axis?
Supination-Pronation and Rotation
