Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome (FAI) Flashcards
1
Q
two types of FAI
A
- cam type impingement
2. pincer type impingement
2
Q
describe cam type
A
there is a femoral deformity (head not round)
3
Q
who is cam type more common in?
A
males
4
Q
describe pincer type
A
there is acetabular overhang
5
Q
who is pincer type more common in?
A
women
6
Q
what do both FAI lead to?
A
damage to the labrum
damage to the cartilage
usually lead to OA in later life
7
Q
presentation of FAI
A
- activity related pain in groin, particularly in flexion and rotation
- difficulty sitting
- C sign positive (grasping of anterior and posterior hip in pain)
- FADIR (flexion, adduction, internal rotation) provocation test positive
8
Q
diagnosis of FAI
A
radiographs
CT but MRI is better for visualising damage to labrum and bony oedema
9
Q
management of FAI
A
observation of asymptomatic patients
arthroscopic or open surgery to remove CAM/debride labral tears
peri-acetabular osteotomy
arthroplasty in older patients with secondary OA
