Extensor Mechanism Rupture Flashcards
1
Q
what does this consist of?
A
tibial tuberosity patellar tendon patellar quadriceps tendon quadriceps muscle
2
Q
what causes a rupture?
A
fall on a flexed knee with quadriceps contraction
3
Q
what is effected in a rupture
A
either the quadriceps or patellar tendon
4
Q
predisposing factors to tendon rupture
A
tendonitis (quinolone antibiotics) chronic steroids diabetes RA chronic renal failure
5
Q
presentation
A
unable to straighten leg
palpable gap
patellar tends to be in under 40 and quadriceps in over 40
6
Q
diagnosis
A
SLR
palpable gap (not obvious on obese patients so use USS)
XR (high patellar it is PT, low patellar it is QT)
reduced power is a tear
7
Q
management
A
surgical repair with tendon to tendon or reattachment of tendon to patellar
