Female Reproductive System Flashcards
A muscular, tube-like structure which serves as a sheath for a penis, as well as an exit point for a baby.
Vagina
A thick, fatty set of folds which protect the outer tissues of the vulva. It usually has hair follicles which grow pubic hair during & after puberty.
Labia Majora
The external genitalia of a female.
Vulva
Mound of fatty tissue anterior to the pubic bone. Pubic hair grows here.
Mons pubis.
A small structure filled with nerves, & located where the labia minora converges. It serves as a pleasure center. Homologous to penis.
Clitoris
Tube which allows urine to pass outside the body.
Urethra
Lower portion of uterus. 1 inch in length & width. It protects the uterus from bacteria & other foreign objects & is the entry point of sperm into the uterus. Opens a small amount during menstruation, in order to allow menstrual blood to exit thru the vagina. Widens during childbirth.
Cervix
The inner-most layer of the uterus. It is an implantation-site for humans. Its lining is shed during menstruation if no pregnancy occurs during a menstrual cycle.
Endometrium
The muscular middle layer of the uterus. Induces contractions during labor to expel the ZEF.
Myometrium
Small oval-shaped glands located on either side of uterus. They produce ova & hormones.
Ovaries
What hormones do ovaries produce?
Progesterone & estrogen
Narrow tubes attached to the upper part of the uterus. They serve as a pathway for the egg to travel to the uterus & are usually the location where fertilization takes place. Openings have finger-like projections called fimbriae.
Fallopian Tubes
The top part of the uterus, across from the cervix.
Fundus
The process in which an ovum comes out of an ovary.
Ovulation
The finger-like projections at the end of fallopian tubes. They catch the ovum which ovaries release during ovulation. Then, they sweep the egg into the fallopian tube.
