briefly describe palpation in the bovine
A
- lubricate! and duck bill hand into rectum
- remove fecal material and find genital tract on floor of the pelvis
- sweep side to side to locate the cervix
- grasp the cervix and pull caudally
- direct retraction: grasp the broad ligament of the uterus and pull one horn caudally or inserting middle finger into the lower intercornual ligament and lift dorsally and caudally
- indirect retraction: sweeping the pelvis and gathering any portion of the genital tract in the palpaters hand and pulling it onto the pelvic floor

briefly describe palpation of the mare
A
- lubricate! and insert fingers in cone shape
- slide hand to outside and scoop out as much manure as possible
- reach cranioventrally towards the mares umbilicus, cup your hand and pull back to catch the uterus
- follow the the uterine horn to the tip to find the ovary which is usually dorsal and cranial
- palpate follicles not CL
- on the way out lay hand flat on pelvic floor and when it falls off the ledge you have found the cervix
