Feeling, nervous system and neurons Flashcards
central nervous system
part of the nervous system consisting of the brain and spinal cord
peripheral nervous system
part of the nervous system that is located in all of the other areas in your body
spinal cord
part of the central nervous system inside the spine which is made up of mainly nerves
cerebrum
the largest part of the brain where hiking takes place and where your memories are stored
cerebellum
parts of the brain that coordinates your movements
brain stem
part of the brain that connects the brain to the spinal cord; it controls automatic functions such as breathing, blood pressure and your your heartbeat
neurons
long, thin nerve cells in the nervous system
dendrites
branch-like parts of a neuron that receive nerve impulses from other neurons
axon
a tube-like structure attached to the cell body of a neuron, which carries the nerve impulses away to another neuron or to an organ such as a muscle
sensory neuron
a neuron that sends signals from sensory receptors to the spinal cord and the brain
interneuron
a neuron that can receive signals from neurons and transmit impulses to neurons; they are mostly located in your brain and spinal cord
motor neuron
neuron that receives signals from the brain and spinal cord and sends them to effectors such as muscles or glands
nerve
a big group of axons bundled together
grey matter
part inside the spinal cord which contains neurons
white matter
part inside the spinal cord which contains the axons of the motor neurons and sensory neurons
