Feedstuff Classification Flashcards
What are some methods for evaluating feeds for livestock?
Chemical analysis, Proximate analysis, Digestion trials, Balance trials, Physical appearance, Cultural practices, Cost
What is: Chemical analysis
Attempts to subdivide components of a feed to estimate the relative amount that is present
What do digestion trials do?
Measure feed consumption and fecal excretion
How do balance trials differ from digestion trials?
They account for losses from urine, respiration, and sometimes skin. They are more accurate in nutrient retention
What is: Cultural practices
A general knowledge of fertilization practices, maturity, storage r/t nutrition
What is the most important consideration?
Cost
What is included in variability of feedstuffs?
Weights, General quality, Nutrient content, Moisture, Molds (toxins)
