Feb 27 Emotional Regulation & Mood Disorders Flashcards
What is an emotion?
feeling that is different form a normal person’s baseline state; biological function of the NS
What are the 3 central attributes of emotion?
Physiological arousal, Affective (feeling) response, Behavioral response
What is the James Lange Theory?
Physiological changes occur in response to an event;
“Stimulus->Response-> Emotion”
What is the Cannon Bard Theory?
An event activates the thalamus, which stimulates cerebral cortex to produce emotion AND stimulate a physiological response
What is Schachter’s Cognitive Model?
Emotional reaction is caused by attribution of the environment the physiological arousal;
“Stimulus->Arousal-> Attribution-> Emotion”
What is the Papez circuit?
Emotional expression and experience are mediated in this forebrain structure
What is the Primary emotions (Antonio Damasio)?
Innate, built-in, hardwired emotions; processed by LIMBIC SYSTEM (AMYGDALA).
What is Secondary emotions (Antonio Damasio)?
The experience of an emotion (feeling & learning); processed not only in limbic system, but in prefrontal areas and S1 cortices
Neural system for fear?
Sensory input-> thalamus;
thalamus-> amygdala;
&
thalamus-> neocortex (both) -> hippocampus & -> amygdala
Klüver-Bucy Syndrome?
First discovered in monkeys with bilateral temporal lobe damage that would lose amygdala;
loss of fear b/c of deficits of amygdala
What is Major depression?
A type of depressive disorder characterized by a depressed mood of at least two weeks in duration
