Features Of Science Flashcards
Who cam up with paradigms?
Kuhn
What is a paradigm?
A shared set of assumptions and methods
How does psychology lack paradigms?
- It’s a pre-science
- Too much disagreement
- Conflicting approaches
What is a paradigm shift?
- Progression within science.
- Revolution takes place.
- Accepted paradigm is questioned.
- The new assumption is taken on.
Does psychology have a paradigm?
There is a broad agreement that psychology is the study of mind and behaviour.
Evidence of paradigm shifts in psychology:
- Wundt introspection to behaviourists to humanistic to cognitive neuroscience
How is Kuhn’s concept of ‘proper’ science being orderly flawed?
Most sciences are characterised by internal conflict, dispute and refusal to accept new ideas in face of evidence
How do theory constructions happen?
Through gathering evidence via direct observation
Features of science:
- Theory construction
- Hypothesis testing
- Falsifiability
- Rplicability
- Objectivity and empiricism
Hypothesis testing:
- Should be able to make clear and precise predictions based on this theory.
- Scientifically test the theory.
- Deriving new hypothesis from existing theory’s - deduction
Who came up with falsifiability?
Popper
What is falsifiability?
The possibility of being proved false through hypothesis testing.
What does Popper call psychology?
A pseudoscience - cant be falsified
Which theories does Popper suggest are the strongest?
Theories which survive attempts to falsify them are the strongest
What is replicability?
Findings must be repeatable across different circumstances and contexts
