Features of an effective essay that uses division and classification as the primary mode of paragraph development Flashcards
the essay does not leave out any other example in categorizing or grouping concepts
Completeness
the essay presents parallel constituents for each category; each category has a
corresponding partner or counterpart in another category
Consistency
the essay shows no interlaping of constituents for any category or group; everything is mutually exclusive
Exclusiveness
is used to add a deeper meaning to words and to add flavour into them, figurative language manipulates words such that what they mean is not on the literal level
-they mean something else within the context of the given text in which the figurative language belongs
Figurative language
an application of comparison and contrast in which the writer tries to make a
connection between at least two (2) concepts that, when analysed beyond their surface meaning, may appear as similar or dissimilar to each other more than what they let on
Analogy
direct analogy or comparison (eg. You are the apple of my eye.)
Metaphor
the juxtaposition of two (2) words that are seemingly complete opposites of
each other, to create meaning and effect (eg, darkest light, deafening silence, etc.)
Oxymoron
treating abstract concepts, and non-human characters or things as humans
Personification
indirect analogy or comparison; easy to determine as this makes use of the words “like” and “as” (e.g. Your eyes are like the stars at night. You are as lovely as a rose)
Simile
the process of writing anything that goes on in the writer’s head; the writer does not stop writing within a given time limit and there should be no attention paid on established writing conventions (e.g. capitalization, choice of language, form, grammar, punctuation marks, sentence structure, etc.); the only restrictions are the theme or topic and time limit
Freewriting
is a non-linear way of showing information; it connects topics on a screen to related information, graphics, videos, music-information is not simply related to text
Hypertext
an error in logic or error in reasoning; a conclusion that is false or deceptive; reasoning that is unfair, lacking in sound reasoning, or demonstrating lazy or simpleminded thinking
Logical fallacy
appeal to logic
Logos
Also known as the memorandum, and is the most familiar form of internal communication in the business setting
