Fear Flashcards
What are fear appeals?
Persuasive communication that arouses fear to promote precautionary motivation and self-protective action
What are the main principles of the Extended Parallel Process Model?
Threat evaluated first, then efficacy
High threat & high efficacy = danger control
High threat & low efficacy = fear control
Low threat = irrelevant
What is the boomerang effect?
If threat high but efficacy low, people may reject message and engage in more dangerous behaviour
What is the critical point?
When perceptions of threat outweigh perceptions of efficacy and there is a shift from danger control response to fear control response
What were the outcomes of the recent meta-analysis by Tannenbaum et al on fear appeals?
Fear appeals worked better if efficacy statements/support were provided in advertisements
