when do fat emboli usually manifest?
A
24-72h after insult (can be trauma or surgery)

classic triad for fat embolus?
A
hypoxaemia
neurological abnormalities - e.g. confusion
petechial rash

investigations for fat embolus?
A
full neurological and resp exam + CXR
CT if neuro symptoms are present
imaging of brain receommended

mx of fat embolus?
A
supportive care: o2 therapy, fluid resus, occasionally mechanical ventilation

aetiology of fat embolus?
A
fragments of fat enter systemic circulation and lode in small vessels of lungs or other tissues
most often due to fracture, esp of long bone
symptoms depend on site of embolism
