Pancreatic Juice and Bile:
Alkaline, used for digestion of lipase, amylase, trypsin
NonInflammatory acute Diarrhea s&s
- water and non bloody stool
- disruptions of normal absorption and secretory process
- cramps, bloating, nausea and or vomiting.
- Can result in dehydration
Inflammatory acute diarrhea s&s
- infectious
- caused by pathogenic invaision of intestinal cells
- fever and bloody diarrhea
- lower left quadrant cramps
- urgency and feeling of incomplete defacation
- can result in dehydration
Travellor’s Diarrhea
- infectious (mostly bacterial)
- treat w ciprofloxacin (the active metabolites are beneficial)
C. Diff
Gram pos
- very infectious
- toxin a and toxin b destroy intestinal lining
S&S:
severe diarrhea, blood or pus in stool, fever, abdominal pain
tx: flagyl and vancomycin
Osmotic Diarrhea
water is pulled into the bowel by the hyperosmotic nature of its contents. colon is unable to reabsorb fluid
Secretory Diarrhea
Secretory process of the bowel is increased, excess bile acids remain in the intestine
Inflammatory Diarrhea
acute or chronic inflammation or intrinsic disease of the colon
IBS
not inflammatory bowel disease. Unknown physical markers, CNS regulation of normal motility. triggered by stress, menstruation, diet, food etc.
Antidiarrheals
Mu2 receptor opioids.
ex. Lomotil and Imodium
atropine can also cause GI to decrease its motility
