Elimination Flashcards
1
Q
Gastric Juice Components
A
HCL (parietal cells), Pepsinogen (gastric chief cells) and Histamine (enteroendocrine cells)
2
Q
Three Ways to decrease acidity in the stomach
A
- h2 receptor antagonism (parietal cell receptor)
- Proton Pump Inhibito
- Antacids
3
Q
H2 Receptor Antagonists
A
Histamine 2 receptor antagonism. blocks h2 selectively and decreases HCL production Drugs: quick acting Ranitidine (zantac) Cimetidine (Tegamet) Famotidine (pepcid)
4
Q
PPI’s
A
Bind to H, K and ATPase enzymes to inhibit the proton pump (inhibits HCL secretion) higher efficacy than h2, longer halflife. Meds: Omeprazole (losec) Lansoprazole (prevacid) Pantoprazole (pantoloc)
5
Q
Antacids
A
increase stomach pH. Meds: Aluminum hydroxide (ampojel) Magnesium Hydroxide (milk of magnesia) Calcium Carbonate (tums, calctrate) Pepto-bismol Rolaids
6
Q
Side Effects of Aluminum and Magnesium
A
Aluminum: constipation
Magnesium: diarrhea
7
Q
PUD Therapy:
A
1st Line:
Antibiotics x2 weeks - amoxicillan, clarithromycin and metronidazole (flagyl) + PPI (losec(omeprazole))
Bismuth Therapy:
antibiotics + Peptobismol (inhibits bacterial growth and mucosal adhesion)
