4 movements
Mvt 1: Overview
Variant on sonata form - slow introduction leading to quick 1 in a bar feel; Beethoven, Mozart and Mannheim influences.
Mvt 1: Expo
Follows typical keys - minor then relative major. S1 has scherzo quick 1 in a bar 3/4 feel, fiery similar to Mozart 25.4 follows by lyrical 2nd theme led by woodwind, oboe in particular.
Mvt 1: Dev
Combines elongation and fragmentation of ideas, using them contrapuntally across woodwind section
Mvt 1: Recap
Follows typical stucture but appears abruptly after development, similar to Mendelssohn 4.1 and 4.4
Mvt 2
Adagio cantabile - typical structure, opens with clarinet solo and accompanying sustained horns followed by Sturm und Drang B section.
Mvt 3
Scherzo - vivace. Aggressive Minuet. Trio lighter in nature; strings attempt to steer back to Minuet aggression, 2x horns interrupt and continue Trio.
Mvt 4
Typical sonata form - octave unison opening in strings, 2nd subject lyrical woodwind, exposition repeat removed. Development contains alternation between strong rhythmic unison strings and relaxed, rubato woodwind moments and silence.
Orchestra
More Classical orchestration but no trumpets. Woodwind used in similar nature to Beethoven than Haydn.
Harmony & Tonality
Demonstration of typical and atypical keys, diminished harmony used for tension and use of suspensions for dissonance.
Humour, drama, narrative & programme
Drama executed through use of Sturm und Drang in each movement
Melody and theme
Skyrocket features appear frequently in melodies as do Mannheim Sighs
Texture
Variety to create drama - octave unison, dialogue, contrapuntal and hammerstrokes for impact.
