When was the Docklands at it’s height?
1700- 1920 In the British Empire, biggest port in the world , with low skilled jobs in factories and warehouses.
When and why was there a decline in the Docklands?
Containerisation from the 1960’s onwards, meant ships were too big, to travel up the Thames and into the Docks. Felixstoxe replaced it.
How many jobs were lost after the decline?
12,000 lost 1978 - 1983.
In 1981 up to 60% of men were unemployed= negative multiplier affect = tophobia.
Why was the LDDC set up in 1981?
How big was the Docklands development?
To improve economic conditions (create more jobs), improve the transport system, improve the environment restoring and cleaning up the docks, improve social conditions (new housing and recreational spaces).
How was transport improved?
72 miles of new roads built, 1.8 km Limehouse link 1993.New extensions 7 lines, 45 stations going to London City Airport.
What will happen to London City Airport?
£370 million development = 6.5 m passengers by 2025 to use 111,000 = 4,000 jobs Made possible by the initial investment in Docklands infrastructure, long term benefits.
Social improvements…
7% spent on social services: 2 colleges & 12 primary schools, 5 new health centres.
What was the population growth because of the development?
In 1981 = 39,400 by 2001= 98,500.
How much did unemployment drop? How many jobs were created? Economic benefits
17.8% = 1981 7.2% 1997 but social cleansing. 27,000 = 1981 to 200,000 2016. Canary Wharfe created = Young working professionals
Environmental improvements…
250,000 trees planted, 130 hectares open space created. Bird Sanctuary were East India Dock was.
What environmental impact did the DLR extension to London City Airport.
120,000 fewer taxi rides = 288,000 reducing CO2 emissions by over 160 tonnes
What negatives came with the development?
More money was spent on infrastructure and environment, then social services for the new influx of people hospitals and elderly not invested in.
Small business suffered vs big corporations.
How were housing prices affected/ negative economic factors
As the environment increased as did the house prices, so the original WC insiders, can no longer afford it = outsider+ tophobia. Plus new jobs are in quaternary jobs, locals don’t have the skills. The Guardian £5 for a coffee
