Face Flashcards
where does the facial arteries come from?
branches from the external carotid
what are the three branches of the external carotid artery that supplies the face?
superficial temporal
facial
maxillary
what pathway does the venous system of the face follow?
the lymphatic system
what is dangerous about the pathway of the veins?
they connect to the sinuses and can pick up infections, which could lead to it travelling to the brain
what are the three salivary glands?
parotid
submandibular
sublingual
which nerve provides the SENSORY innervation to the face?
trigeminal nerve
where does the trigeminal nerve supply MOTOR innervation?
muscles of mastication
what are the three divisions of the trigeminal nerve?
opthalmic
maxillary
mandibular
what is between the mandibular condyle and the mandibular fossa of the TMJ?
a fibrocartilaginous disc
what movements are at the TMJ?
elevation (closing mouth)
depression (opening mouth)
protrusion (jetting jaw outwards)
retraction (bringing jaw back in)
lateral motion
what type of joint is the TMJ?
modified synovial
what makes the TMJ a modified synovial?
because it has “2 joints”
the mandibular condyle articulates with the fibrocartilaginous disc, which then articulates with the mandibular fossa.
why is the TMJ a double edged sword?
because while the disc keeps it all in place, if the disc becomes tight or non-pliable it will move with the mandibular condyle and stretch out the capsule
what are the three TMJ ligaments?
lateral temporomandibular
stylo-mandibular
spheno-mandibular
what is the action of the stylohyoid?
elevates and retracts the hyoid bone to assist in swallowing
