Eysenck's Theory Flashcards
3 personality dimensions
introversion - extraversion
neuroticism - stability
psychoticism - sociability
Personality dimensions of an offender
extravert, neurotic, and psychotic
Personality types are innate
based on nervous system we inherit
Extravert’s NS
underactive NS therefore seek stimulation
Introvert’s NS
pveractive NS therefore require less stimulation
Neurotic’s NS
high reactivity in sympathetic NS to respond quickly to threat so are over anxious and unpredictable
Psychotic’s innate hormones
high testosterone levels therefore a prone to aggression
Socialisation in non offender
Children are taught to delay their gratification and are therefore more socially orientates
Socialisation in someone with high neuroticism and extraversion
their NS makes it difficult to learn and be conditioned and are therefore less likely to learn anxiety responses to antisocial impulses therefore more likely to act antisocially
EPQ stands for
Eysenck’s Personality Questionnaire
EPQ
Psychoogical test that locates respondants on the three dimensions to determine their personlaity type
AO3 + research evidence
EYSENCK AND EYSENCK
- 2070 male prisoners EPQ scores with 2422 control
- prisoners have higher average on all
AO3 - counter research
FARRINGTON ET AL
- meta analysis
- psychoticism was the only dimension offenders scored higher on
AO3 - culture bias
BARTOL AND HOLANCHOCk
- Hispanic and African-American offenders in NYC prison
- all less of an extravert than the non-offender control
AO3 - Measuring personality
Personality is too complex to reduce into a score especially criminal personality as very dynamic
MISCHEL = we have multiple personalities dependent on situation and people
