Optimize the patient’s remaining vision & assist the patient to perform customary activities
What should be avoided when using topical anesthetics in the eye?
Avoid rubbing the eyes
* can cause corneal abrasion
What other ophthalmic medications can be used?
Steroids & anti-inflammatory drugs
* long-term use of topical steroids can lead to glaucoma, cataracts, & ↑ risk of infection …
* therefore use oral NSAIDs instead of topical steroids to avoid these side effects
